I have a 2003 toyota camry with 271,000 miles. I have recently replaced two oil gaskets. I had the fuel injection cleaned. The catalytic converter by the engine was recently replaced but the one near the muffler needs to be replaced. Should I invest in replacing the catalytic converter by the muffler or should I just get another toyota? Do you think it will still last me a long time before having to put more money down for other major repairs?
Thank you
I would say that if the car runs well, is not burning oil, and a mechanic checks it with a fancy scan tool and nothing else is wrong it's probably worth replacing the rear catalytic converter. Those can usually be replaced with aftermarket cats that don't cost too much. (Unless you're in the Peoples' Republic of California or or other states that impose CA's insane strict rules on such things.) Right now is not the greatest time to be looking for a replacement if looking for a used vehicle since prices have been going way up.
No kidding, people know everyone is getting stimulus checks, prices are insane. I drove past a big lot that’s normally full has about 80-100 used cars at all times. Inventory is down to 24 cars.
Yeah, if the car is otherwise solid I would definitely install a rear converter and keep it for while. You're certainly not going to be able to get another good vehicle for what that is going to cost. Have it checked out though before putting any more money into it, evaluate it as though it is a used car that you are interested in buying.
Lol Chuck, unfortunately I do live in the People's Republic of California. Love your comment very funny 😊. Thank you and to all for the advice.
If it's still treating you good and running well, and not throwing any codes and passes inspection, keep that converter until you have to change it. And getting a used car right now is just crazy with super inflated prices.
Thank you for the advice ☺️.
If it just needs a converter, I'd just get one and put it on. As it ages, nobody can really tell you what may go bad on a car with that mileage.
Thank you
You're welcome!
Yeah your at the age/mileage point like a 12 year old dog! If shes been good to you, keep het going until a major failure like engine/trani. Used car prices right now are INSANE!!
Thank you
I’d just replace the catalytic converter if there is nothing else wrong with the car as that car should last 350k miles if you take good care of it. Used car prices are going up and I bought a 2019 Camry SE in January for $19k right before the prices shot up. Went to the dealership I bought the car from for service yesterday and saw the same exact Camry I have with the same mileage and they wanted $21k for it.
Cool, your Camry has appreciated in value. 🙂
Yep lmao good thing I bought mine when I did. I wasn’t planning on buying a car at that time but the prices shocked me as I assumed a 2 year old Camry would cost $23k still 😆. The Accords are even more expensive
Thank you
