Hey Scotty, a close friend of mine wants to give me a used 2002 hyundai elantra as a gift knowing my situation on not having a car.

He claims the engine runs good and the only issue is the cv axle needs fixing. I done my research and its not an expensive part for me to replace. Less than $70 worth the part.

I questioned why he just wants to give it to me. He tells me that with a little to no work needed on the car I can take myself to better jobs till I can get myself a even better car in the future .

My mother is unsure of the idea since we have 2 cars at home that need repairs sitting in our property.

I have a good feeling about this car tho. Its free and still runs. Just needs its legs back.

What do you think I should  do?

no dont buy it. you dont want to invest any money in those vehicles, they are money pits. i had a 2000 cavalier with unknown issues that had no symptoms. get a newer vehicle 2006-2012 to start

It's a free car if all it needs is a CV axle that is a very simple fix me personally I would definitely get it

Yes, if it runs OK and just needs an axle right now I don't see why not. Not to look a gift horse in the mouth though I'd check it over first. Even though the car is free there will be expenses in transferring title, registering it, and insuring it aside from having to install an axle, so don't waste that money if the car is a real dog.

Then assuming it's OK, drive it until something expensive goes wrong and junk it. Just don't put any big money in it.

Good point, I'll take that into consideration. Thank you for your time!
