rubber comes from trees! silicone is different.
latex comes from trees, but you wouldn't want that on your valve cover. Cars utilize various blends of elastomer (rubber), but primarily synthetic. Tires are made of synthetic rubber (SBR). Hoses are made of EPDM, silicone etc.
The global demand for rubber is very high. There's no way it could be met with trees. German company Bayer put synthetic rubber into mass production around 1910.

I'm sure they do, but that stuff is such a pain in the rear to remove. I think pre-formed gaskets are the bee's knees.
