Water pump replacement for $1200 - am I being scammed?

Hello, grateful for any insight anyone can share. I have a 2016 VW Golf with ~55k that is leaking coolant and getting error P00B7 (engine coolant flow low/performance). A shop has quoted me about $1200 to replace - $470 for parts and $700 (4.4 hours @ $160 per hour) for labor.

After watching Scotty's 'How to replace you water pump' video, I'm even more confused since it seems simple to replace. Does this seem reasonable? Any idea what might cause the higher price in my scenario? Perhaps location of water pump in my specific car? Happy to share any add'l context if helpful.

Thanks in advance!

My research shows that this job should cost between $400 and $600 including parts.  You're getting ripped off.

For most cars that have bolt-on water pumps outside the engine the parts are inexpensive and fairly easy to replace, though that varies a lot depending on how much stuff is in the way. I installed a new water pump on my daily driver a couple of years ago for about $50 and it wasn't too bad a job.

If you are unfortunate enough to have an engine with an internal water pump it is a much more expensive part that requires major disassembly to replace, and failure can cause serious engine damage.

Wow just $50? Thanks for the response, this makes sense. My car's water pump is actually also bolted on/not internal according to model-specific how to vids i've watched

Yeah, $50 is pretty typical for a water pump. Rockauto shows pumps for you car from $45.79 to $176.79. Looking at the photo it appears to be driven by a gear (probably off the timing chain). I don't know how tough it is to replace the pump on that engine but it sure looks like $1200 is pretty outrageous for that job.
