Slipping, grinding, rattling: do I need a new transmission?

Ford E250 conversion van

143500 miles

Stock transmission

The other day, after a year of owning this van for a year, I felt the transmission start acting up. It was slipping and bucking as I coasted down hills, jerking and going up in RPMs when it downshifting. I booked a next day appointment. Checked for leaks, fluid under the pan, and nothing visible.

The next morning, it was noticeably worse. Bucked and kicked in reverse going down the driveway. It was okay at 65 mph but sounded whiny. Downshifting into lower gears was rough and the whine would turn to a roar at low speeds, especially when accelerating from 0-20.

The mechanic pulled up codes P0430 and P0433 at the shop. When we started it up to get it off the lift, it wouldn't reverse. There is a loose metal rattling sound even in park now. We had to push it off the lift.

The shop thinks my only option is to replace the transmission. What do you guys think?

You have cat codes and a rattling noise. Go under the van and smack on the catalytic converter while listening for a rattling noise while you do it. If the ceramic substrate inside there breaks apart, it can clog the exhaust
