I have a 2012 Mazda 6 2.5L 4cyl Automatic
My steering returnability is gone and a few days ago I started hearing a clunk noise and squealing noises, steering wheel binds when returning it to center after right turns (not left turns though)
I thought about it awhile and decided to check a few things, I lubricated the u joints on the steering shaft and the telescoping portion of it. No fix.
I then replaced my inner and outer tie rod on the passenger side after I realized the noise sounded like it was over on that side. I noticed the clunking sound went away but it still binds while centering after a right but the creaking noise remained but a lot less noticeable.
I then disconnected the tie rods from the knuckle, jacked up the car and turned the steering wheel side to side, the noise is there in the steering for sure and not in the rest of the suspension.
My worst fears came true, it must be the rack and pinion, don't know if doing the tie rods on the driver side will help or not. Currently gearing up to replace the rack. I keep my power steering fluid full (with the OE Mazda M5 fluid!), belt I changed a year and a half ago.
Am I missing anything, am I on the right track?
He probably is the rack but you could try my video how to fix binding power steering Scotty. Sometimes flushing them out will make them stop binding
