I have an automatic 2003 Acura el (basically a Honda civic with VTEC) with 193,000 km. I have multiple problems with this car but the most important one is that the car cannot recognize when it is park. I put it in park and it locks itself there, and won't let me out unless I use the override. This is a new problem that I think I caused when I accidentally ran the car momentarily with the parking brake. Also, it is important to note that I am fixing this car that has been sitting 4 years prior to my attempt to let it run.

Also just wanted to say I cannot take the keys out as well. Because it doesn't recognize park.
Seems like a sensor issue. Have you tried to wiggle the shifter to see if it helps or not?
Check under the brake pedal for the brake light switch that switch controls the shifter and brake lights it just screws in there, should be videos on youtube to show how to replace it, usually if this sensor goes bad shifter gets stuck in park, the brakes lights will get stuck on, or not work when pressing on brake pedal. i had a similar issue before.
