what's your opinion of subaru crosstrek 2.0 litre 6 speed? i've heard these engines need "resealing" after a certain mileage or time period. i've never had a car where that was ever a concern.

I can come close:

My son has a 17 crosstrek with the 5-speed, and my daughter has an 18 with the CVT.

They are loud and unrefined, although the second gen is a significant improvement over the first in ride quality.  The interior is plain and cheap looking.  And minor parts (bolts, fasteners, etc) are cheap.

On the upside, ours have been extremely reliable.  They are roomier than they look.  They are absolutely amazing in foul weather.  And, for the price, they perform quite well off road.

Parts are cheap and DIY maintenance is easy (except spark plugs).

If you don’t need AWD or plan to take it off the pavement, then I’m with Scotty and you should get a Civic or Corolla.  But if you need what a Subaru is, the Crosstrek is a very good car.

Personally, I wouldn’t want one for my long commute. But I’d buy one for my kids again in a heartbeat.

The "resealing" issue pertains to Subarus with head gasket problems where the gaskets would typically need replacement at around 10 years or 100K miles. That was fixed over a decade ago, but the old reputation persists.

The main weak point on today's Subarus is the CVT, especially with the company's insistence that the fluid is "lifetime", but if you're looking at a manual transmission that isn't an issue. A lot of people do report the 2.0 to be underpowered but that's something you would need to judge for yourself on a test drive. (From what I understand the manual trans is not available with the more powerful 2.5 engine.) Also as has been mentioned the Crosstrek interior is pretty chintzy and Subaru engines are noisy and unrefined compared to the competition. On the plus side safety is very good on those cars. If you need AWD they can be a good choice.

They are okay but not great cars like Toyota and Honda

Look up "Toyota Corolla Cross" too. They should be coming out soon. Sharp looking in my opinion.
