Any codes? Timing belt OK?

Assuming the timing belt is all right and there are no internal engine problems, a quick check to see whether you have spark is to spray some staring fluid into the air intake and crank. If it fires up briefly you have spark and the problem is fuel delivery. If it doesn't fire up you have no spark.

You should be aware that car is in the range of years where Subaru was still having head gasket problems. Usually they will leak externally before failing internally. (Turbocharged engines excepted, those used better gaskets. I think for Subaru the "XT" corresponds to turbocharged but am not certain.)

The “T” in XT means it is turbocharged. That 2010 Forester XT came with the 2.5L turbocharged H4.

Thanks, good to know, I wasn't sure about that. The owner should not have to worry about head gasket problems then unless the engine has been overheated or otherwise abused.
