85K CVT is shot. Subaru replacing with a refurbished with 3 year 36k warranty. Should i sell the car once it's fixed? Car prices are high now wondering if waited 6 months they would come down? never again buy a Subaru, It's had bad head gasket, leaked strut, radio goes on and off touch screen locks. It's a P.O.S. I'm really surprised. The dealer said some CVT's go out at 40k had one at 17k they replace. Disapointed at best.
i think you answered your own question.
bye bye cvt
hello stick shift! {pear}
Yeah I’d get rid of it.
When it’s something like a Subaru Crosstreck 1.6L where the CVT is rated for 250NM and the engine makes only 150NM… it’s not terrible, expect for the obligatory eye watering $600 valve body at 90,000 miles (just cause Subaru are c**** and don’t supply parts)
But the legacy? That’s a much more complex transmission (TR690) mated to a much more powerful engine.
Subaru just refuse to give up their obsolete designs. There’s a reason why practically almost no car marker (with some exceptions) has boxer engines or powerful engines mated to CVTs without a launch gear.
Just sell it while prices are high,
something like a Camry with an 8 speed conventional auto (AWF8F35/F45/G45) and a A25 4 cylinder engine (the 2GR V6 is also fine but they seem to last a bit less) should last you 150k miles (if you service it well, mainly engine oil every 5k~7k miles and gearbox oil every 30k~60k miles)
(But note that early model years had issues with that 8 speed, it’s only now that they’re sorting out all of its issues)
Just avoid GDi (expect SkyActive and BoosterJet their GDI works. Modern Toyota have MPi that works), Turbos (expect BoosterJet), DCTs, CVTs, Hybrids, and complex electronics.
I in addtion to that Subaru have a 2012 Camry Se 165K, nothing has gone wrong. First Toyota ever. It's everything Scotty has said and then some reliability wise.

@albok ,
Yep, the ‘11-‘17 Camry is genuinely also great. The thing to watch out for is the 6 speed transmission TM-60LS (U660/U760) - it’s the weak spot and I’m seeing quite a lot of people on these forms have that as their first major issue.
Just remember to change your ATF at least every 50k miles although I’d recommend it much more frequently 👀
Those CVTs seem to be a crap shoot, some go out at low mileage, some last 150K or more. I'd sell the car or trade it rather than trust a "refurbished" CVT. Car prices are not expected to come down for at least a year or two, possibly never if the politicians have their way.
The perfect example of why I have never owned a vehicle with an automatic transmission, CVT or otherwise. Manuals rule!
Manuals are great until you have bad knees and arthritis, especially in stop-and-go traffic. The original autobox in my daily driver went well over 300,000 miles and I figure that's fair enough.
I would get rid of it, sounds like a bad deal.
That is unforgivable crap. Makes me feel lucky. I’m at 120k with a 2013 2.5i. After starting to listen to Scotty I took it for a transmission fluid change. I think it’s wise to do that every 40k or so. I love having no car payments.
That's the frustrating thing about those, the failures seem so random. Some die an early death and some go for a decent amount of time. Changing the fluid regularly should definitely help, as will taking it easy while driving. (Avoid jackrabbit starts and no towing.) Having no car payments is a beautiful thing, I have not had any for decades.
