Hello, I was recently given my fathers 2012 Subaru Legacy 3.6r because I'm going to school out of state. Have you ever worked with the flat six Subaru boxer engine, what are thoughts on them? I'm just curious.
Those engines are difficult and expensive to work on, and are gas hogs. One good thing is that they do not have the head gasket problems that 4-cylinder non-turbo Subarus of that vintage suffer from. Since it's a free car I'd be inclined to drive it until something expensive breaks then get rid of it rather than letting it be an "endless money pit".
Baby that car since the automatic transmission is another weak point of those cars,
Great combo in my mind. They don’t have the head gasket issues of the 2.x and the AT is much less prone to problems than CVT.
Change the oil every 5k, don’t beat it up, and it will be a solid and safe college ride.
