- Hi Scotty. I have a 1977 camaro with 22,000 miles. I drive it maybe 100 miles a year any more and used to change the 10w 30 oil every year, but now I'm getting lazy and do it every two years. If I switch to synthetic could I safely change the oil every 3, 4, or 5 years? Thanks. Dennis

I would not switch to full synthetic oil in a car that was never engineered to use it. You may experience leaking seals and other problems.

I use synthetic oil in my '65 Marlin and '67 Rebel V8 engines with no problems. (The former even has an old-style hemp rear main seal.) However, those engines were rebuilt prior to introducing synthetic oil so the seals were fresh and there are no problems. If your Camaro still has its original 44-year old seals they may start leaking because synthetic oil flows and seeps much better than conventional oil. So I'd hold off on synthetic oil until such time as the seals are renewed.
