I have a 2011 6 cyl Ford Ranger truck and I just got a letter saying the drivers side airbag needs to be replaced. (Passenger side already replaced). The Ford dealer said the part is back ordered and may take up to 5 months to come in. Would it be a good idea to have the airbag removed until the new one comes in?
You could...but realize that not all of the airbags were actually faulty and you <might> do more harm than good and be removing an airbag that is actually ok. It's really up to you. I would leave it so as not to worry about setting off airbag lights on the dash, etc.
I would keep it. If you remove it and have nothing there, then you are really in trouble if you get into an accident. At least if it’s still there, you have a chance (and not all of them were faulty).
If it were my car, I would definitely get that dangerous thing out of there. Those airbags spray metal shrapnel, and have maimed and killed. And they can be set off by relatively low energy collisions. Who cares about the light on the dash. Put some electrical tape over it. I'm a safe driver. I'll take my chances with my defensive driving and seatbelts.
