2006 Dodge Ram 2500 5.9L Cummins, 206K miles, Auto trans. My temp gauge shoots up real high but the engine is not actually overheating. What could be causing this?

Do you have access to a scan tool and can check to see if the OBDII data (temp) does the same or it’s within the normal range thermostat?

bad temp gauge sender or an intermittent short in the temp gauge wiring are a couple of possibilities.

I'd get a new temp sending unit. Mine read very low and when replaced, read normally.
