Hi scotty, should i be concerned about this? On my 2016 toyota tacoma 3.5L 4wd, with 35,000 miles, the temp gauge goes to halfway like its supposed to and sometimes i look at it again and its back down to a quarter of way up, and a little after will go back to halfway. It does not go past halfway. I do live in Massachusetts and it is cold.
that's nothing to really worry about but when you get a chance I would change the thermostat it is probably sometimes sticking too open
Also, you may need a new temperature sending unit. They get corroded over time and send an incorrect signal to your temp gauge. Usually, they are screwed into a water jacket on the intake manifold. I would first drain a little coolant, remove the sending unit and clean it on a wire wheel and reinstall it. It might work and save you the $20 for a new one. Worth a try!
