Just wanted tell all you car lovers there are many many developed, tested and patented solutions to relay attacks that a lot of car companies and Tier1 suppliers have been granted going back years. Why they haven't used them to stop these "cheap trick" kids and cheap electronics is wide open to speculation. I for one am going to fight this tooth and nail since it's costing Canadian drivers $130/yr more in insurance - If you'd like to see a patent that actually talks about relay attack use Google Patents and type in this patent number - US9988014 - it was filed in 2016 - and one of dozens - search your favourite car company for one - have fun - Cheers from Canada!
We already had the technology to stop car thefts -chipped keys. Then the manufacturers decided to go keyless entry, basically broadcasting to everyone every time you press a button. People would rather sacrifice security than the inconvenience of messing with a key. They traded the awe factor for security.
This is probably the best anti-theft device out there as long as the thieves don't have a tow truck:
