What does the forum think of the gr4

They look like a lot of fun. But probably not the most practical/comfortable/economical choice. Toyota has a rep for bulletproof engines, but 300 hp from that little 3 is really asking a lot. I'd consider a GR86 if I wanted a everyday, all-purpose car.

I would not trust a turbocharged 3 cylinder as an engine you're supposed to be able to have fun with.

If we look at European cars, there are decent turbo 3 cylinders, they 'kinda last' 125k miles but those are meant for very moderate driving - not "sport car driving"!

For example, Suzuki turbocharged their 3 cylinder and got massive power grains - they went from 65 horsepower to 110 and it's great with a pretty big 1.0 bar (~14.0 psi) of boost while also lowering their compression ratio - but what Toyota have done is completely different

With 26.3 psi of boost, 10.5 compression ratio making 300 hp is just completely insane - it is NOT the kind of moderate Japanese engineering we're used to, and I doubt if the engine can actually handle that.

To me it sounds like an incredibly stupid concept, if they wanted more power - instead of boosting the crap out of a 3 cylinder is definitely not the way! (At least if you want it to be drive-able and reliable) they should've given a very moderate boost to the 2.0L Dynamic Force, maybe figured out a way to fit the 2.4T but definitely not what they did with the 3 cyl.

So yeah, I'd avoid it like wildfire if you want a car to last!

If you want a toy, to show people and for car enthusiast "cred", eh why not?

You want our thoughts in terms of what?  If it’s fun factor, yeah, I am sure it’s a hoot to drive.  But if you are concerned about longevity, I would pass over this vehicle or if you still plan on buying it don’t keep it for the long haul.  Get it out of your system and sell it;  it should retain its value fairly well.
