Hey Scotty, need your expertise. I have a 2015 Lexus RX 350, and I changed my motor oil yesterday. Today, I am hearing some weird ticking sounds when the engine is idle. Please watch the video https://drive.google.com/file/d/1sy1uy9jj0uDKMFyOZf3eXBwykYihPHqM/view?usp=sharing and help. Thanks!
What’s the mileage?
Mileage about 72,300.
Since it be after you just changed the oil, I would first recheck the oil. If it be low it could be the cause of your ticking. If not the problem lies elsewhere.
Did you use the correct oil specification & quantity which your oil cap/owner’s manual, recommended?
Hi, yes I did. I used 0W-20 as specified, and poured enough oil and checked the oil dipstick. The quantity is within normal levels.
Which oil and filter did you use? To me it sounds like a valve related noise. Does the sound change with engine temperature?
I have experienced valve lifter noise when using off-spec oils even when the viscosity was correct (Mercedes engine). I would also checked that the filter is correctly mounted if it has the cartridge insert type filter.
Dan L is correct. Most ticking noise comes from improperly adjusted valve lash or, in the case of hydraulic lifters, the lifter is not pumping up properly. The lifter could be collapsing or the oil viscosity could be too low. You said 0-20 oil. Do you live on the planet Mercury? Check for the proper viscosity at ambient temperature.
