Hi Scotty,
I have a Toyota Avensis, manufactured in 2016, manual transmission. It has a 2.0-liter D-4D diesel engine, 143 HP, UK model.
The fuel reservoir has a capacity of 60 liters.
I'm thinking to add 1 liter of petrol over the 59 liters of diesel so the fuel injectors and DPF ca be clean better. I'm thinking to be like a prevention of building up any carbon deposits.
Do you think this could cause any damage to the engine?
Thank you! Great show!
Victor
Extremely bad idea. Don't use regular gasoline in a diesel.
I would not do that.
Do you have any issues with the car?
It gets a high fuel consumption. I've tried cleaning additives for injectors and DPF, but no big difference.
Maybe try pressure cleaning the fuel injectors.
Regular gasoline will most likely damage a diesel engine, even in small quantities. The gasoline will spontaneously combust long before the piston reaches TDC in the cylinder, which is around when the diesel ignites. Diesels don't use spark ignition, they compress the air charge so fast and to such a high degree that the diesel fuel flash ignites shortly after it's sprayed into the hot air. The gasoline will ignite pretty much as soon as it leaves the injectors, creating an extremely premature pressure spike. Think engine knocking if you accidentally put low octane gas in an old high performance gasoline motor. Gas in a diesel would be similar, but it'd likely be a lot more violent because of the pressures.
There's also the physical difference between gasoline and diesel. Diesel is heavy and lubricates parts, gasoline is a solvent, and a relatively poor lubricant. You could destroy your fuel system because of the change in lubrication.
I'd find a good diesel mechanic and have him pressure clean the injectors.
Hi Victor.
Do not put petrol in your diesel. A modern diesel engine will not tolerate petrol well. It has no lubricity so will have negative effects on the high pressure fuel pump and the electronic injectors.
Back in the 60s and 70s, we would put some petrol in the land rover's diesel to stop it freezing, but diesel engines were very different back then.
There are many suitable injector cleaners and dpf cleaners on the market that will be safe to add to your diesel. You could try using a premium diesel such as 'shell v-power' every other tank, but with premium diesel selling at £2 a litre, the additives are probably cheaper.
Have a look at Millers Oils. They offer a full range and are a reputable company.
