Scotty. I have a 2014 Toyota Camry Se with 283,000 mainly hwy miles. Lately, I've noticed some hesitation in shifting from 3rd to 4th. I'm due for a transmission drain and fill. They don't want to change the filter. Any ideas?
Clarification: when was the last time the transmission fluid was changed?
Assuming your one is also a 6 speed - I am seeing a lot of people having the same issue with the 3-4 shift on the forums…
I’d pray that all that it needs is an ATF change. If it resolves the issue - just change it more frequently. otherwise, go to multiple transmissions shops to see if they can pinpoint the issue (and not just tell you “it needs a rebuild”)
when it’s shifting from 3rd to 4th, the transmission engages the C2 clutch and solenoids SL1, SL2 and SLT.
I do not know what’s the reason they keep failing, clutch control valve? C2 accumulator pistons? But usually something just burns the C1-C2 friction packs… (Aisin transmissions from that era had issues with friction packs as a result of them trying to make the transmission as small and as cheap as possible, using as little friction plates as possible)
(C1-C2 drum is ~$200+ only for the part, Toyota made it impossible to repair so when it goes out you just have to replace the whole drum)
If it keeps getting worse you’ll probably either have to do a rebuild (which is very difficult on this gearbox and not many people can do it correctly) or install a used one (/manufacturer reman - if it exists for this unit? I’m unsure…)
