Toyota cold start rattle

Hi Scotty,

Been a viewer for while. If memory serves I think you had a brief segment on a Houston news channels a few years(more than a few) back. Bought my son a used 2010 Camry LE with 190,000 miles on it, knowing the previous one owner did only oil changes, wipers and tires since he bought it.

I wanted your opinion regarding the cold-start rattle due to a lack of oil pressure to lock the VVT gear in place. Is this truly a “death rattle” that will kill this engine if the gear isn’t replaced, or can a thicker oil or quality engine flush help minimize the additional wear caused by that stuck pin? Powertrain seems solid otherwise. Thanks!

Nathan

Sounds like the classic timing chain rattle,  Chain, guides and tensioner needs replacement.
