Hello Scotty

hope everyone is well ,

I have recently bought a toyota corolla 1.4   2004 reg (december) hatchback,   which has only  done 40k miles  in the UK , but reading online there seems to be problems with piston rings and excessive oil consumption for the corollas of those years  ... is there anything I can do to prevent it ? Will I have problems in the future ?. its really a lovely car .. thank you so much for your channel its simply the best

Just change your oil more frequently.

If it’s already burning oil, keep adding it.

Oil is cheap, engines cost a fortune..

Thank you

See this Toyota Master Diagnostician discuss oil consumption issues in Toyotas. It's the best exposition I've found, to date:

Thanks for that

Here in North America only the 2.4 engines are prone to oil consumption, we don't have a 1.4.

But some years of the Corolla do have oil consumption issues in which case you would want to keep on checking on the oil and adding it as needed when it starts burning oil.

Thank you

Every car will burn oil if you don't change oil soon enough (5k miles/ 1 year). Some models have more tendency to do than the others and that's why you see some model years are oil burners, although if they have been taken care of, you may have a healthy engine.

Thanks for the advice , going to attempt to change the oil and filter myself lol

It's not difficult. You can do it! One note: Buy the Toyota OEM filter. It's very good, reliable and NOT expensive. And, pick up the crush washers, as well. Finally, find a brand that you like, and stick with it. All oils that meet the right specs are good, but they have different additive packages that can not play well with prior oil additives, in the engine. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_XyRiQ0vr9Q

Brilliant !
