Toyota Engines oilburner

Hello Scotty,

I live in Germany and looking for a 2009 Toyota Auris, 1.4 or 1.6 liter. Are these engines oilburner or only certain engines with certain displacement from this time period?

@g-t & @dan may know.

Well I’d avoid the old school 1.4L ZZ engine - they do burn oil, they do have timing issues, they do carbon up the exhaust. It’s just a weak design.

The 1.6L ZR is a much better design, it ultimately later became one of Toyota’s best small engines.

BUT being a 2009, some had MASSIVE oil consumption issues.

I’d recommend a ‘10 - up (I also think getting the 2nd gen car over 1st might be worth it) with a 1.6L if you can confirm that there’s no significant oil consumption, no ValveMatic glitches (if equipped), and no excessive timing noise.

edit: spelling.

Those aren't particularly oil burners if you take care of them it was a 2.5 l Toyota engine that burned oil
