Hi everyone,
I have a 97 4Runner 4x4. Automatic.
The car drives normally in normal conditions. However, when a hard break, stops, when I let go of the brake, the car won't go. Press on gas, the engine will ramp up like in neutral (N gear), then it will "click" (seems something falls back into place) and then drive like normal again. Thoughts anyone?
Thank you!
How many miles on the car?
It seems to be a worn transmission issue. When was the last time you serviced it?
The truck has 266K on it. Regular transmission service on it. The last transmission service was less than 2 yrs ago when I change the starter.
I am thinking would it be an engine or transmission mount? or even a driveshaft or ball joint?
If the rev goes up but the car does not move is related to the transmission. With that mileage, things are a bit worn, even for Toyota.
Have you checked the level of the transmission fluid? Also, how long has it been since the transmission fluid has been drained and filled?

Sounds like it's dusted. Could be a failing torque converter but even then the rest of the system gets contaminated.
With that mileage if the body is still nice I'd go for a jasper rebuilt engine & trans. It's not cheap but it's cheaper than buying another vehicle right now. You can go cheaper with the engine reman if you're a daredevil but the trans has to be through someone reputable along with a solid warranty.
