Hello everyone I read There is an investigation (not a recall) for the 2013-2018 Rav4s battery terminals shorting out on the hold down metal frame that goes down vertically across the battery that can cause loss of power and fire igniting in the engine compartment. I have a 2016 RAV4 how can I tell that my particular one is at risk of catching fire? Should I have it checked out? I don’t prefer going to the dealer since it’s not even a recall. Is it worth replacing the terminals? Another thing it’s still got the original battery it’s 5 years old but recently had it tested it’s still good. Let me know how I can prevent from a fire happening thanks.
I had it looked at by the mechanic I go to around here. He said the terminals were good he felt them, and everything I showed him the article he looked at it and again this is an investigation right now not a recall. He told me to call the dealer anyway to see if I could get on a wait list in case there happens to be a recall and to give the Vin number, anyway I did call Toyota and said Mine doesn’t even fall on it.
Show me a photo of your battery and the hold-down, and I will advise you.
If the battery test OK then there's no reason to replace it. It could still go for years.
As long as the battery terminals and cables do not touch the battery holder, there is no issue. Regarding your second question : I would change the battery because of age.
