I am looking at one to buy it has 159 thousand miles.  I have read these can last up to 400k.  The truck is selling for 14,495. I want to know is there any specific problems i need to be looking for.

They don't have much in the way of inherent mechanical problems but a lot can happen over 20 years. You don't know how the truck has been maintained or what may have happened to it over the decades. Also, components can fail simply due to age. The worst problem that early Tacomas are prone to is serious structural frame rust. Be sure to have a good mechanic give it a thorough inspection before purchase.

I'd be wary of putting too much money into an older vehicle. A 2004 Tacoma with 160K miles in a standard cab has a full retail price of $7-8 K.. Same year/model etc in the Tacoma Xtra cab limited (top of the line) is worth up to $11-12K. The limited is the most expensive version and yet your seller is asking $2,500 more than full retail on the highest trim level. Here's KBB price range for the limited trim: https://www.kbb.com/toyota/tacoma-xtracab/2004/limited-pickup-2d-6-ft/?condition=good&extcolor=white&intent=trade-in-sell&mileage=160000&modalview=false&options=6338467%7ctrue&pricetype=private-party&subintent=sell&vehicleid=3582
