Test Compression After Head Gasket

Doing a head gasket on a project car. 04 Buick rendezvous 3.4l. After I reinstall only the gasket, heads, & rocker arms/rush rods, can I safely check compression by hooking back the battery and turn the key to crank the starter or should I crank it by hand at the harmonic balancer? ( without drive belt, alternator, intake manifold)

I will have a shop check & shave head & valve work

I just want to make sure my thinking is good and compression is good before i reinstall everything else. . Still learning as i go.

Thank you!
