  1. My 2002 RAV4 was having similar issues that eventually left my wife stranded at a store. I thought we were going to have to buy a new transmission. As we had just bought this RAV4 with 275,000 miles on it. Long story short I did a drain and fill. And and changed the gasket and filter on the transmission. The fluid was dark and burnt. Had a bad smell. I replaced exactly what came out. (Around 4 quarts) Which is a fraction of what the transmission holds. But it worked. Drove great after that. I repeated the process about month later. And I will do it one more time soon. I hope yours is as simple as this. As we are really happy with this vehicle. Its at 296,000 now. And no issues. Other than the Rpms are a bit high at 70mph. But I think one more drain and fill should solve this. Hope this helps!😁👍
