Hey Scotty, in my country they only sell Corollas with turbocharged 1.2 L 4 cylinder engines
Are they reliable?
That engine came out in 2015.
There some recalls and TSBs for 8NR-FTS (if you are not in China, those have 9NR-FTS) taken from source:
EG-00014T-TME "8NR-FTS Turbo Overboost DTC P023400"
·EG-00105T-TME "Rattle noise from exhaust (front) due to broken heat insulator bracket"
·EG-00113T-TME "8NR-FTS Noise from the vacuum regulating valve"
·EG-00219T-TME "8NR-FTS Engine Coolant Flow Noise"
·EG-00094T-TME "8NR-FTS Cylinder Misfire DTC P030100, P030200, P030300, P030400, P030027, P030085" (ignition coils replacement is prescribed)
If the measures taken are ineffective, it is recommended to clean the intake valves from carbon deposits.
• Recall #4961 (27.05.2021) for 2019-2021 JDM vehicles with 8NR-FTS engine (Corolla, C-HR). The welded part of the high-pressure fuel pump may be cracked due to low resistance against the pressure which cause fuel leakage. Prescription - replace the HP fuel pump.
The corresponding campaign (21SMD-041T, 05/26/2021) has also been launched globally.
• And once again - for the health and longevity of Toyota engines (and NR in particular), it is just necessary to deactivate EGR system - some owners just reprogram the software, but plugging the gas channel with a metal plate seems to be a more reliable solution.
Oh! Thanks bro for the heads up
In general with small Toyota engines and the NR from the old Yaris, they last around 200k km (125k miles) It usually doesn't have much issues, just similarly to other small Toyota engines they wear out completely.
I'd avoid any turbo engine, Honda has run into issues with their 1.5, same with ford's 1.5L and pretty much 90% of turbo engines are garbage.
The problem is, in my country, fuel is relatively expensive, so naturally, dealers only import cars with small engines. Here u only find big naturally aspirated engines in high end cars, that's all, and even those, they come with the smallest engines possible
So u basically have no choice
Are there any diesels avaliable?
In the Corolla, no
U can only get that 1.2 turbo either with a 6 speed manual or a CVT, that's it
I ask generally. In Corolla they were discontinued with current generation.
In my country we only get the smallest cars, we don't even get the camry, and the Corolla i was asking about, is the hatchback version, the sedan version comes either with a 1.6 4 cylinder or a hybrid 1.8, but that they're both significantly more expensive than the hatchback
You can answer your question by finding out the answer to this question:
In your country, how long has been Toyota selling them in your country and how did they hold up so far? Generally, the turbo engines can not last as long as the NA ones, but being a Toyota, they may hold up quite some time.
I think they've been selling it for like 3 years and the car itself is pretty expensive, so it's better to ask around first
They offer either a 6 speed manual or a CVT, which one to go for?
Definitely get the manual transmission. About the car, what are the other options? Does Honda sell cars there?
Yeah they do sell the Civic here, but it's way way more expensive than the Corolla
For the Price of the Corolla u could get a Peugeot 308 or a Renault Mégane, but i don't really trust the french quality, they're not really known for reliability as they age
If you tell where you live, some folks here could help you for other good options.
Thanks bro!
Avoid downsized turbocharged engines, especially when they’re relatively brand new technology.
Just look at the issues Honda had with their 1.5L turbo engine, and they make the best engines..

Do you have a choice of a naturally aspirated engine, at all? Or are they all turbos?
Here, u can only get the Corolla with that engine
The Civic is only available with a 1.5 Turbo, and i think those have some issues
Alright, thanks bro!
You’re welcome & good luck.
