Trans not shifting until warm...sort of

Hey Scotty, I have a 2004 Toyota Camry with the U151E transmission (5 speed automatic). I bought this at a car auction a year ago and it runs perfectly fine except for one issue. From a cold start the vehicle shifts without hesitation up until its time to shift into 4th gear at 25 mph. I have found a workaround for this, but not a solution. If I let the engine warm up to a quarter of the way between cold and hot, it shifts perfectly fine through all the gears. My fluid level is where it should be on the dipstick.

Any insight would be helpful.

Get a scanner on it and see what, if any codes there are.  Free at Autozone and others.

The code means the engine is not warming up correctly within the time frame set by the computer.  This indicates a problem with your thermostat, probably stuck open.  Replace it with OEM and your trans problem will probably be solved.

I scanned it with the one at AutoZone, but it didnt show any relevant codes (afaik). Currently I have a P0128 that I need to take care of.

Im curious now if that will work. I had already intended to replace the thermostat, but didnt have the time right now. I will definitely let you know what happens. Ty for the suggestion. At any rate, its a problem that I have to fix anyway

I finally had the time to change out the thermostat. I was amazed to see the difference between the old one and the new one with regard to the car heating up faster.
I will say that I still have to wait for it to heat up to the third tick mark before it will shift properly into 4th and 5th, but the wait time is a lot less than it used to be. Going to be a big win for me this winter not having to wait for 20 mins.
Thank you for the help
