Should I change my ATF

2002 Lexus ES300

Hi Scotty,

I bought my car in 2012 with 70k miles and it is now at 171k. I have never changed the transmission fluid and I am not sure if the first owner did either - I do get regular oil changes and otherwise take good care of my car.

I am thinking about either doing a drain and fill or possibly even a transmission flush but I am also not sure if at this point maybe I should overlook it all together. The transmission shifts fine and is not slipping but it jerks from time to time when I try and rapidly accelerate to pass a slow driver or merge on the highway. It can also jerk a bit going from park to reverse or park to drive which I have counteracted by pressing the brake a little harder when shifting from P to D or P to R. (and  by "jerking" I mean I can feel the transmission moving below).

I checked the transmission fluid yesterday and it still has some slight pink to it but there are tiny brown particles and some aging in the fluid is evident.

I will keep an eye out for your reply and thank you for those helpful YouTube videos you post.

Is the ATF still full? See here for further guidance -

Yes, it was full when I checked before I posted but I went ahead and just did a drain and fill and I've already felt an improvement in the form of smoother shifting during rapid acceleration. I am also going to have my guy check the transmission mounts based on MountainManJoe's recommendation. {black}

All the best!
