Hello.
I have a 2001 Nissan Maxima 297000 miles.
I found out that they have timing chain driven water pump.
I bought the water pump, chain and tensioners from the dealership. I asked a mechanic to change them, but he said that I didn’t need to because it wasn’t overheating or making noise.
is that true? or should I insist on him doing it? because I think they are interference engines.
The noise thing is somewhat true. If you're not hearing a rattling, etc. From the front of the engine, the pump isn't necessarily worn out, nor is the timing chain or tensioner. Likewise, ratting does not mean the pump is worn. The tensioner or cam sprockets could be worn. If the engine is showing signs of overheating, and it's due to the pump failing, (there are multiple things to cause that, not just a bad water pump) then you may have waited too long. Internal pumps can leak antifreeze into the oil pan. Water and bearings make a suicidal combo for your engine.
There's no reason to take chances. If you don't know when the pump was last replaced, if it ever was, I would do it. I'd also find someone else if he doesn't want to do the job.
I believe you have the same engine as my 2000 Maxima, 3.0 V-6. When the water pump leaks, coolant will drip onto the ground near your passenger side front wheel. With this engine I don't believe that the leaking coolant mixes with the oil. I have changed mine twice after noticing leaks. It is at least a 5 hour job, took me a good bit longer my first time. Replacing the chain, which I have not done, is a much bigger job. I would guess you will pay close to 2 grand for the water pump installation and chain install. I would hold off on this if you are not having issues.
