Hello everyone, my 1997 Ford Explorer Sport has never had its transmission fluid changed to my knowledge. I have checked the fluid and it is brown and burnt smelling. The transmission is still functioning as it should right now, so I would like to change the fluid to prevent damage. I am frightened though of the horror stories I’ve heard of high mileage transmission fluid changes. I know that it can be that the only thing keeping a transmission from slipping is the grit in the fluid. I had an idea though, perhaps I could drain the old fluid and keep it. Put in some fresh fluid and see how things go. If the tranny starts acting up I could drain the new fluid and put the old fluid back in. Would that work? Thanks for the input!
You said the fluid has burnt smell and never changed before. Considering being a Ford and the conditions, I wouldn't risk it.
Ok Thanks.
I would say change it but save the old fluid incase you need it again.
