Transmission issue - 2015 Hyundai Sonata

My transmission in my 2015 Hyundai Sonata SE suddenly began failing to shift properly from (I think) 2 to 3rd gear. It simply revs high. Mileage is 72,000, relatively average usage. Never had transmission service of any kind. What might this be given the sudden onset of this problem? It worked fine driving to work one morning then didn’t work that night.

If you are the original owner, take it to the dealership and have them fix it under the 10 year/100K mile powertrain warranty. The 6 speed automatics have been pretty good so far, it's the Hyundai/Kia DCTs that have had problems. The Sonata SE has the 6 speed automatic, but it's still a good idea to change the transmission fluid every 30K-40K miles with OEM genuine fluid. Complain to the dealer and try contacting Hyundai USA - that car still has 4 years and 28K miles left on the powertrain warranty.

and then sell it as quickly as you can after they fix it.

It’s nothing to be surprised about. It’s a typical Hyundai/Kia vehicle, living up to its reputation.

It is likely your transmission on its way out.

Did you scan for any DTCs?

Hopefully your orignal owner and hit up the dealer on your 100k warranty.

warranties are still valid if you are the 100th owner. However , warranties expire after a mileage OR number years, whichever comes FIRST, and his Hyundai is more than 5 years old.

For Hyundai/Kia the powertrain warranty is 10 years/100,000 miles so OP would still be covered. But the bumper to bumper (or “basic” warranty) is only 5 years/60,000 miles so he would be out of that (unless OP extended it).

ok the transmission should be covered then. Ask the tech to sit in the car with you so they don't try the old "we couldn't reproduce the problem" excuse.
