Transmission neglect

  1. Scotty, I own a 2002 GMC Sonoma 4.3 with a 4L60-E automatic transmission with 171,000 miles. I’ve owned the truck for 7 years and never changed the transmission fluid. I recently added Lucas trans additive for preventative maintenance without draining a quart which the instructions on the bottle said was okay to do. I immediately lost overdrive and I’m now having trouble going into third sometimes. I ordered a new AC Delco filter kit and new Dexron6 oil, should I change it or be happy with what I have left?

This is why you do not put additives in a working transmission. Additives are NOT PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE.  Preventive maintenance is preventive maintenance lol.

Sorry, but your seals just fell apart and the transmission is ruined. You can expect it to give up really soon.

Do not change it out at that mileage. If you have already added the Stop Slip from Lucas, all you can do is drive it until a rebuild becomes necessary.

Drain the oil fluid and keep it. Then change the filter and put back the old fluid to avoid further issues.
