I bought a Honda CRV at 97,000 miles and according to the Carfax - the transmission was never serviced. Will it be safe to service the Transmission?

Yeah it's most certainly okay to do. Even tho your changing fluid there is still alot of old fluid left in the system. I have a 2000 Honda crv with 165000 miles and changed my trans and diff fluids twice. Buy OEM Honda fluid only. Don't use anything else or you can destroy the trans.

Yes. Why wouldn't it be?

Make sure you don't flush it and use Honda fluid only. Another maintenance item would be timing belt as well as the valve adjustment, if they have not been done recently.
