Transmission Shift Cable Rattle, Serious Issue for 10th Gen Civic Owners?

2020 Honda Civic LX Sedan, 2.0L NA Engine, CVT 7000 miles

Sometimes when I press the gas pedal there is a vibrating rattling sound coming from behind the dash somewhere in the middle towards the passenger side area. I've removed everything in the glove box, sunglasses, etc. that might have been producing the noise, it was not that. After watching and listening to videos with the same exact sound, there were a few people who said they finally found the source of the noise.

They found that the transmission shift cable was vibrating against a metal bracket and that it's somewhat loose. I located the transmission shift cable behind the engine close to the firewall and the noise does line up with where I hear the noise from inside the vehicle.

My question: If this is the case where the rattling is coming from the transmission shift cable, if I don't do anything will it become a serious issue later on? I'll include all the videos, pictures, and a comment from the guy who diagnosed the problem for reference, thanks!

Comment from a guy who diagnosed and supposedly fixed the issue:
"it was the bracket for the shift cable underneath the car that vibrated against the floor making it sound like it came from inside. I had to pull the plastic shield and the heat shield to get to it. When I found the bracket, it was missing a nut at the U-shaped end of it. I added a nut for the bolt there. The cable has rubber insulation where the clamp is supposed to hold it. However, there is no insulation for the small metal piece in between. I taped that part up a little in case somehow the clamp shifted. Also, the clamp part of it that holds the cable has nothing holding it tight yet there’s clearly a spot to add something, so I found a short bolt and nut I had laying around. Put all the shields back up nice and tight and I haven’t had a problem since. I fixed it about a week ago and I haven’t heard anything."

  • No such rattling generally won't hurt anything a cable is shielded anyways. Let's just say they don't make them like they used to

That's a relief! Thanks for answering Scotty! It was worrying me for a while, so I'm glad to know it won't hurt anything.
