Trouble with high idle after throttle body work.

Good evening folks, new to the forum. Wanted to join to possibly help others and in this case get some help.

I have a 2010 Chevy Avalanche, 5.3L, auto trans, 167,160 miles, 2wd but with z71 suspension package.  I recently cleaned throttle body, it's a drive by wire. After reassembling everything I started it and it had a high idle of 3K and wouldn't idle down. Did several "manual" idle relearn procedure. Got one to work so I parked it and called it a night after doing the driving portion of the procedure. Got in to go for breakfast the next morning and it did fine, normal idle, shifted fine but did downshift pretty hard. Put it in park and it immediately revved to 3K again. Talked to a few folks they asked how I cleaned the throttle body, I said I opened it with my finger sprayed cleaner on a rag and wiped it off with one good squirt in it for good measure. I was told I messed it up to get another throttle body so I did. Put it on and im back to square one. I was told I need to find a shop or dealer with a "tech2" scanner/computer and get them to do a idle relearn. I even went as far as to clean mass air flow sensor with the proper cleaner. Tried the remove neg cable for a long while. Every procedure I could find online or was told about I have tried. I'm at me wits end here folks. Any advice, help, opinions, whatever ya got in ya arsenal I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance! Y'all have a good night!

may check that ur TPS is properly set
at this juncture, after all else fails, try adjusting the TPS

probably a vacuum leak

I have looked all over the engine bay and the only hose that remotely looks like a vacuum hose is the one going to what I believe is the evap solenoid, I think. But it's on right good.

I guarantee you have more vacuum hoses than that. Search Scotty's videos for his smoke method, or search online for a vacuum diagram for your vehicle. Not to mention the leak could be at the intake manifold.

I'll do that. Thanks

MountainManJoe, I did a giggle search found several diagrams/schematics but nothing stood out resembling or labeled for my engine. I'm going to look again just so if I find one I'll print it out so I'll have one handy. Thank you for your replies and advice!

throttle body relearn procedure

1) Start the engine and let it idle in park for 3 minutes. During that period the idle may be higher idle than normal.
2) After 3 minutes, turn the engine off and leave it off for 60- seconds.

3) Start the engine again and let it idle in park for 3 minutes one more time. During these run periods you may see a check engine light. Scan for codes and if you get throttle body related codes, clear them.

4) If the idle speed is still off, drive the vehicle at speeds above 44-mph and operate several acceleration and deceleration cycles. Then repeat step #3 one last time

If it doesn't work you need a scan tool that can do the process.

Nissanrob88, I did that exact relearn procedure and still acting up so I have a appt with a feller to do a relearn process with one of those fancy scan tools. Thanks for your info.

Let me know if that works.

Nissanrob88, the relearn/reprogram that i was able to get done worked. She running mo' better now. Thanks for your input tho, I appreciate it!

I have a 2004 Avalanche 5.3L and I have cleaned the throttle body a few times. I always take it off to clean it and the relearn on the 2004 as far as I know is to disconnect battery for 15-20 min. Things have changed with the newer ones it seems like. Im glad you got it do a relearn.

Perfect happy to help.

Nissanrob88, if you don't mind me asking what scanner/code reader/computer do you use. I'd like to look into getting one that does all the good stuff.

My highest scanner is a Autel Maxisys ultra

V2021.12 DOIP MB SD Connect C5 Star Diagnosis Plus Panasonic CF19 I5 Laptop With Vediamo and DTS Engineering Software.   I use this for Mercedes. It's not this exact one but they are pretty much the same thing.

The one I use the most and cheapest is the.Zurich zr15s

I also have a Innova Smart Diagnostic System Tablet. But it's not used that much.

Lastly a Autel Scanner MK808 Diagnostic Scan Tool

The Autel maxicom mk808. That might be your best bet. It cost 500 But I've seen them go for 425.00. its has a lot more capability and data plus it has all the extra special features not found in regular scan tools. . In the end it all depends on the car. Just so you know  the scan is able to do something doesn't mean the car will let you. Some cars just don't have the capability or the software to perform some actions.

The Zurich zr15s is actually really good.. I use this tool the most because it does some of what the 800  dollar scan tool does and it cost 300. You can really dive into the car and even control some modules and sensors.  If your planning on buy something I suggest you really do your research and look into multiple units and find the one in your price range that servers you best. Especially if your going to spend hundreds of dollars on something.

Info assimilated Nissanrob88, I really appreciate the advice and help!

No problem man... That's why we are here
