Hi Scotty. Love the show. If one were to buy a high performance car and drives it like a commuter, should it theoretically last longer? Would cars with Brembo brakes and high performance coolants last longer and run better if you use the car as a simple commuter? curious. thank you!
In theory, yes, since the vehicle was built to handle higher stress and loads from driving it hard (especially at a track). You are paying extra and using it as just a normal car - which, to me, doesn’t make sense (but to each their own). That being said, the rest of the vehicle besides the powertrain may have issues long before (especially electrical), so in the end it depends on the make and model (and model years). Also, highway driving is much better for the powertrain (less stress) than idling, stop and go city driving.
I've done this many times. Just remember that door dings, rock chips, scratches, etc. come with being a commuter car. As well as increased fuel expenses.
I would think it would last longer, of course depending on the car. I'd not use a ferrari for commuting unless I was filthy rich, for example. But yeah if you get something high performance but reliable, I would definitely use it to commute if you simply love to just drive it (and look awesome).
