RE: 2003 Honda Civic Si - 121,433 miles
Hey Scotty,
How can you tell the difference between valve train noise and fuel injector noise? I noticed on your recent Mazda 3 video you knew right away that there was a fuel injector noise and from experience it was obvious to you. But what is it that allows you to determine the difference between a valve train noise and a noise coming from a fuel injector? Thanks.

a few ways....
You could try the screwdriver trick ...
You could unplug the injector or pull the EFI fuse ...
Thanks MountainManJoe. Unfortunately a deer strike resolved this issue as the car was declared a total loss. So I went out a replaced it with a 2005 Mazda RX-8, no valve train = no lifter noise.
Harbour freight and all parts stores sell mechanic stethoscope. Harbour freight has the cheapest. It makes it a lot easier to locate where the noise is coming from. It's a good tool to have as it has many uses. Agree 100% percent with mountain man joe. Screw driver trick does work. It can be a little tricky at first but after a few minutes you start to pickup were the noise is coming from..Also unplugging the injector will definitely help in the diagnosis. Once you know how both sound it will make it easier in the future. There are times they can sound the same and something like a screw driver and stethoscope become your best friend
