I have a Ford Ranger which is just shy of 300,000 miles. I wouldn't hesitate driving it cross country. But there is an annoying problem. On hot days, it won't start, or won't start after driving it awhile. If I wait a few minutes, it starts just fine. I suspected vapor lock, but I understand it is rare on a fuel injection engine. So now I guess it might be flooding. Any ideas?

Check that your fuel filler cap is in good shape and venting properly. You never said what year it was. If newer, I would also suspect the evap canister purge valve.
