Can vehicle speed governors be disabled?

I used to drive a Volvo Tractor Trailer that was Governed to 65 mph and  I had a lot of problems where the speed limit was 70 mph and above. My first reaction was to unscrew/bolt the Governor from under the gas pedal to find out that they are now electronically programed.

1) Can a person other than the manufacturer or dealer mechanic with knowledge and a scan tool remove the Governor?

2) Can regular passenger cars be equipped with Governors and is so can it be remover ot installed with knowledge and a scan tool?

They are a major pain to get rid of.

I would advise avoiding vehicles that have them altogether.

Some one with the knowledge and equipment can remove the governor, most likely a tuner.  As far as my knowledge goes, I have never seen a scan tool allow you to remove a speed limiter.  If you can buy something that allows you to change the tune yourself yes. If you go a route like that be careful because you don't know how well a canned tune will work.

You can install a mechanical governor on just about anything but that only limits the throttle. Another similar idea is an aftermarket rev limiter, both can be plucked with ease.

Generally on heavy equipment you want to leave it alone, the forklifts I drove as a dockworker had multiple types & when people disabled them someone got hurt. Many had a gm 2.8 litre up until the early 2000s, granted they are V8s but still.

If in the end you still want it done, you're most likely going to need to rewrite the software or flash the ecm & you'll have to find a specialist for that make lest you want to buy a new module when they fry the computer.

One late 90s flash type reprogramming where you'd have to send oit your ecm was the suburban, those were limited to 118....not that you want to be scooting that fast in one. Hypertech made good money flashing, I still have one of their set-ups meant for 82-92 Camaro & Vettes with the same 350/700r4. Once I tossed the injection for a Holley street avenger the ecm no longer served a purpose & that car came alive.
