Scotty,

My son has a 2012 Volkswagen Jetta (Diesel) with 180K miles. He says he heard the emissions are a big issue with these and the car is near the end. There are zero issues with it currently. No troubles lights or trouble codes. I just don’t know anything about VW nevermind a diesel Jetta. Are the emissions a big issue with these? Is it normal to get like 300k out of this engine?

The automatic transmission on those ones is not good. You need to take care of them religiously.

There is no mention which transmission is present, but yes, VW's DSGs need their service done every ~40k miles.

I agree but most likely it is not a manual.

VW's TDI engines are generally very good for lasting a long time. That said, the emissions equipment do limit the 2.0L engine somewhat so if you live in an area that doesn't do emissions inspections, then go full delete and enjoy the newfound longevity (and improved fuel economy and preformance)
