I’m looking to buy a used car and I have four options to choose from, 2001 Volvo S40 with about 85K miles, 2006 Toyota Avanza with 100K+ miles, 2000 Toyota Corolla with less than 90K miles and 2001 Toyota Camry with less than 90K miles. All automatic and within the same price.
what engine displacements? and how many speeds on those gearboxes?
for example the S40 if it has a 1.9T with the 5 speed it's probably a total disaster, and with the corolla (assuming we are talking about the E120 model) a 1.4L ZZ-engine can terrible and the 1.6L ZR tends to be quite good depending on the quality of maintenance.
MORE INFO NEEDED.
The Avanza is not really a Toyota. Not necessarily a bad car, just not a Toyota. It’s made by Daihatsu and rebranded as a Toyota.
I would get the Camry if your mechanic gives the green light.
One thing to consider - though I really like Volvos (great seats!), getting parts can be a real problem if you're not in the northeast or Calif. And even Toyotas need parts after 20 years, but their parts are readily available, and reasonably priced.
