Hey there Scotty, love your videos.
I have a 2012 Honda Crosstour 4cyl with a timing chain with 166,850 miles on it. My vtc rattles for a few seconds at cold start up. I had the vtc changed once before at 50k. All of my maintenance has been performed on schedule by the dealer including the VTC. Now that the VTC is rattling again 2 Honda dealers say not to bother changing it.
What do you think? Will it hurt the engine or timing chain to let it go?
Am I due for a new timing chain? No check engine lights (ever) it’s been a good car and I’d like to keep it. But I don’t want to ruin the engine either by letting this problem persist.
Should I get a new VTC and timing chain now? Or wait until the check engine light tells me there is an issue?
Last on YouTube some folks say to turn the key 2 clicks but don’t start the car to wait and to do this a few times and the VTC won’t rattle. This doesn’t work for me consistently. Is there any logic to it?
thanks so much
Does the rattle go away? If so, you should only change the actuator but if it stays, the timing chain needs to be inspected.
Either case, I would fix the issue sooner than later.
Yes it only rattles for a few seconds at start up. There are a lot of mixed opinions online as to if the VTC should be replaced And if not replacing it could cause a problem.
mine rattles like like since brand new, Honda technician said it was "normal" lol
