VW beetle restore

I’m thinking of restoring a be beetle I got as an inheritance. The car is in Mexico the year is 1991. Any tips on how to start a restoration? And what about maintenance if I do get it into the country soon. From what I heard I can import it into the U.S. but I want to fix it first. The thing runs good but I would like to have it look brand new. I’m not so worried about a paint job down in Mexico what worries me if I want to upgrade it’s performance or keep it at the same power.
