Wanting to purchase a used Lexus GX460.

Hi Scotty!  I love your show, never miss video.  I like your straight forward honest talk.  I recently retired and I want to hit the road for an extended time and tour a lot of the national parks.  I have a small teardrop trailer (3200lbs) and I want to find a Lexus GX460 to use as a tow vehicle as they have an excellent reputation.  I'm looking for one under $24,000.  Any year from 2012 to 2019.  GX460's that fall in my price range typically have 100K-150K miles on them.  If the seller has maintenance records and I can see that the car was well maintained, how many miles is "too many" to consider on this vehicle?  I would definitely do a pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic, but are there any known issues that I should be looking for?

Thank you,

Rick in Clearwater FL

Welcome new member.  Sounds like you’ve thought it through and made a good choice.  Solid truck, most of which were well cared for.

Only thing I can think of would be undercarriage rust, depending what part of the country it lived it’s life.  Otherwise, if it passes a thorough PPI, you should be good to go.

I found this information on this site: https://www.motorreviewer.com/engine.php?engine_id=107

Despite the fact that the new engine has nothing similar with the 2UZ-FE, they have joint problems. The water pump is still a source of leaks and issues. It has a short life - 60,000 miles (100,000 km), and it's gone. Sometimes the hydraulic chain tensioner fails, loosening the timing chain tension. In the early years of production, the engine was equipped with too thin unreliable valve springs. Some owners complain about increased oil consumption - up to 0.5 liters per 1000 miles. But in the rest, the 1UR-FE engine has excellent longevity and durability, almost the same as the 2UZ-FE.

Don't know enough to tell you whether the 2UZ was the better engine though.
