Help Scotty,
I have a 2013 Cadillac ATS with 92000 miles and the rotors keep warping. I've had 3 different shops look at it and none have been able to figure out the problem. Luckily the latest one stands behind their work and are replacing the ones they put in at their cost since it didn't fix the issue, but they still haven't been able to figure out why it's happening. I know they checked for anything loose and worn in the suspension and checked to make sure the rear brakes were working properly so the fronts aren't doing all the work. What else could cause this problem?
Thanks,
Jon
Do you use two feet to drive or brake aggressively often?
I have been babying the brakes to make sure it wasn't my driving. The only time I use my left foot is when pushing the clutch to change gears since I drive a manual transmission (which I LOVE)
Your driving habits. How aggressively do you brake? Do you keep one foot on the gas & one "hovering" over the brake pedal?
After how many miles are they starting to warp?
The next time it happens, try using OEM rotors. Something’s not right..
Two of the sets were OEM. The vehicle came with Brembo brakes. They did last longer, but still warped in a few months.
If you're killing brembo brakes that fast you are driving like a maniac. Upload a video of how you NORMALLY drive, I want to see the pedals as well.
Driving differently than you normally do will not help things. If you have some g-force/performance app on your phone that would tell alot.
Warped rotors in a few months is unusual for OEM parts.. Are you a ‘pedal to the metal’ kind of driver?
Are they the cheap china rotors or oem? The cheap china ones will warp quickly.
No. Two of the sets were Brembo.
Sometimes, shops that are in a hurry use an impact driver to install the wheels and over-torque the lug nuts. Lug nuts have to be installed at the proper torque (with a torque wrench) and in the correct sequence (usually a cross pattern). Not doing this correctly can warp even the best rotors.
Amen, Doc. I used to have a problem with rotor warpage until I started taking my torque wrench to the studs after any shop touched them. Haven't had a warp since (20 years). Sadly, I feel a need to check any work done at mechanics - I've discovered not-changed oil, tools left under hood, bolts not tightened, etc.
).
Me too.
Sadly it's happened with 3 different shops. The newest one has been in business for many years and, thankfully, stands by their work. The last set they put on they did for free because they really do care about doing the job right. Unfortunately the rotors are warping again and it's going to go back.
Aren't brakes more susceptible to warpage if they're really hot & go thru a puddle? I remember my dad saying something about this years ago, but I could be wrong. Not sure if you aim for puddles when you drive like I do 😉
No.
Help Scotty, please!!
I have a 2013 Cadillac ATS with 94k miles. The rotors are warping repeatedly. I have had 3 shops check it out and no one can fix it. The most recent one is backing their work and have been replacing the rotors at no cost, but they can't do that forever and I really want this fixed. They've ruled out bad rear brakes, bad calipers, suspension issues and incorrect torque on the wheels. What else can this be?!
Thanks, Jon.
