Weird crackling noise

Hi scotty. Recently my dad's car which is a 2012 Mazda cx7 has been making a weird engine noise.

When I drove it, it was making this weird noise like a vacuum sound (woooooosh) and I mostly heard that when I was going 20 or 30 miles per hour.

As I got more up to speed like 40 or 45 I heard more regular engine noise but that woooosh sound was still there. So I floored it a little and came to 60 and that's when the wooosh noise changed to a crackling sound.

I parked the car and turned it off but I still noticed a tiny smoke coming out of the exhaust. My first thought was the turbo bieng blown (this car has the 2.3 turbo which was also in the Mazda speed 3 and 6)

but I'm wondering if it's another cause. As I was driving home I drove slowly but I felt the car shaking as I went near 40 miles per hour and when I parked the car at my house I noticed a huge smoke came out of the exhaust.

Please let me know what you think is going on, this is our only car and I'm still saving my money. I'm really sorry this turned to a story lol but I really need the car to get running normally. Thank you so so much for the help and tips.

If the cracking was in the mid-section of the vehicle, it's possible that the honeycomb grid that comprises the catalytic converter cracked. (That would account for the puff of smoke coming out of the exhaust)

That's not the only possibility, but is the one that comes to my mind.

I heard the crackling around the engine bay.

Like the front of the car. The woooosh sound is gone and replaced by that.

I can send you a picture of the engine bay

And as a side note, the car right now has 200,246 miles. I've recently changed the oil and this was the first kinda big problem the car has had in the four years my dad has owned ir

What color is the smoke???? White or bluish black? Turbos on those use engine oil to lubricate. Some cars also use engine coolant in the turbo to keep it cool. It’s possible one or the other is pushing past seals hence the whoosh sound, and at higher rpms leaking more, hence the snap crackle pop like putting water in a hot frying pan.

It had a white color smoke. Both when it was small and big.

Hey guys if you'd like I can send a video the car running while also showing the engine bay. I don't know how to send videos or if it's possible on desktop computer only, I'm writing this on my phone at the moment

Upload the videos on YouTube and share the link here.

here is the video of the car running

Had to request access to the video. You will need to approve. White smoke is coolant/water. Head gasket leak or turbo. How does your oil look? Is it milky brown or yellowish? Frothy?

access denied. upload your videos to Youtube

I'm really sorry. It was my fault for accidentally denying it. I can send it again here soon. I'll remember to hit accept request this time

@Kaveh316 You don't need to accept request. Just go to the share button on the top right and go to the visibility options and select anyone with the link. Works with me when it comes to school or my CAD teacher showing these types of videos. Unless you intended to do so.
