What are the different gaskets?

Hi Scotty, I cannot find a list of all the different types of gaskets on a vehicle and I was hoping you can make a video of all the different gaskets and how to replace them. I’m aware of the head gasket, valve cover gasket and oil pan gaskets but I know there’s a whole lot more. Could you make a video?

It's a long list my friend. Probably a few hundred of them. Why do you ask? You will never touch 99% of them in your life.

I don’t know what the difference is between a seal and a gasket. From my POV, they serve the same purpose. So in your search, I recommend looking for seals in the car too.

Like a rear main seal. Or axle seal. Or spark plug seal.

there are different kinds of seals, gaskets being one of them. There are also o-rings, face seals, bearing seals, cup seals, shaft (lip) seals, gland seals, plugs, weather seals, spring seals, diaphragms, bellows, and so on, and so on ....
The word "seal" is a very broad term and the possibilities are infinite.

Oic. So a seal is the umbrella term, and gasket is a more specific term.

that's right ... a seal is something that seals. Amazing how language works isn't it.

When I think of a seal vs a gasket, I think of the difference in how the parts go together. If multiple bolts go through the media, and it seals a large area, like valve covers or fluid pans, that's a gasket. If it's sealing smaller openings and there aren't bolt holes, etc in them, they're seals.

That’s a good way to look at it @justinshepherd. Makes sense.
